"Wedding Game" project leads us through the process of a non-heteronormative marriage registration in the reality of today's Belarus. It is based on Hrabennikava's personal experience of organising the wedding and getting married in Mensk, the capital of the republic.
The game mechanics is inspired by an old online flash games "for girls".
"It was important for me to make a fun and exciting game. There is a lot of camp and irony, simplification and glamorisation. Its content was supposed to be easy and entertaining. But I hope that behind the first layer of fun the player will also be able to see the context, the state of queer rights in Belarus, and homophobia.
I chose wedding as the goal of the game not because I believe in the concept of marriage as a life purpose but because it is a simple and understandable indicator of the overall situation non-heterosexual people find themselves in now in Belarus."
"Marriage is what is expected from me as a person of a female sex assigned at birth. Thus, the society imposes numerous things that are supposed to drive me to this "choice". "Games for gilrs" that inspired this project are among them.
From my side it is rather a mockery: "So, you want me to organize a wedding? Is this one OK? Why not? Take it!"
